Kent McCutcheon

Racing age: 34

Marital status: Married to Elisa

Job: Instructional Designer

Hobbies: All kinds of Adventures. Hiking, Camping, Scuba diving etc...

Category: Cat 4 (Road)

Preferred type of racing: Road and Time trials.

Race resume: San Bruno Hill Climb, Wente Road Race, Fremont Twighlights.

Memorable Milestones: Finishing my first race with the pack (Fremont Twilight 2001). Set a P.R. for 25 miles in 59 minutes (Summer of 1985). I should have gone amateur then but did the military thing instead.

Who is your cycling icon and why: I admire anyone who can ride for fitness as a lifelong goal.

Why I started cycling: My mother gave me a red Schwinn World in high school. That is what got me started.

Why I am still riding: I love the adventure and the view of the beautiful countryside. What amazed me about cycling were the friendships made while riding long rides in the country side. I made little friends in high school but when I went for a long ride there was always a group of riders that befriended me. That was the coolest thing about cycling. You never know who you might be riding up to.

Why I still Race: I love to learn more and test my body in different situations. And love the enthusiasm of a win. Love the kind of Pain in legs after a good race or ride.

Favorite Ride: The Death ride. Those long 50+ mph decents with the snow caps in the background are the most awe inpsiring experiences.

Nemesis Ride: Riding up Sierra Road with Mike Z.

My Race Bikes: Performance R100

My worst bike: WalMart Special

Training Philosophy: Remove yourself from family and cultural influences (don't drive the car more than once a week and don't indulge at the social gatherings). Be true to your sport. Eat, drink, talk, sleep like a cyclist and you will have contentment.

Style: Stay close to the lead pack and avoid the crashes. A good strategy is better than a great effort.

Short Term Goals: Improve my hill climb and reduce my weight.

Long Term Goals: Ride for independence and competition. I may not race like the pros but the competition keeps me fit and confident in other areas of my life. And riding keeps me mentally sharp.
