Michael Miu

Racing age: 36

Marital status: Single

Job: Self-employed (President, Base2 Software Design, Inc.) Embedded software engineering.

Hobbies: Cycling, sailing, golf, skiing, music (I play piano), cooking, eating.

Category: Cat 4.

Preferred type of racing: Criteriums.

Race resume: 1986-1987 UCSD entry-level category. At the UCSD criterium, I placed 3rd in a prime and 6th at the finish, all worth points for the overall competition. I pretty much sucked at all the other races. 2000-2002 FFBC Racing Team. Won a prime at the Burlingame Crit 2000. Placed 6th at Davis Crit 2000. Several top 10 finishes at the Fremont Twilights.

Memorable Milestones: 2000 Fremont Twilight Crits: I finally made it into the top 10 after 5 or 6 tries. I know, doesn't sound like much, but I was ecstatic!

Who is your cycling icon and why: Greg LeMond. He was such an inspiration after his first Tour de France win. I feel like he put American cycling on the map.

Why I started cycling: Breaking Away. Yes, really.

Why I am still riding: Have you ever tried running?

Why I still Race: Love of challenge. Strive for excellence.

Favorite Ride: My favorite ride happens to be in San Diego. Start around La Jolla, ride through the UCSD campus. Continue down Torrey Pines and North on Highway 1. This brings you up through Del Mar, Solano Beach, and Oceanside. I prefer to turn around at Camp Pendleton since they use live rounds every once in a while. This ride is scenic and beautiful. If you ever find yourself in San Diego, I definitely recommend this ride.

Nemesis Ride: Patterson Pass Road Race.

My Race Bikes:

  • 1986-1987. Rossin. I found this used at California Peddler in Danville for $150! I built it up with a Shimano 600EX groupo and built my own wheels. It was a lot of fun racing it in college. Then it got stolen. :-(
  • 1987-now. Tommasini. I know there are newer and nicer road bikes out there, but this one stole my heart. :-)

My worst bike: Monkey Wards 10-speed.

Training Philosophy: Ride hard. Don't forget to rest. You can worry about technique all you want, but you need to put in the miles.

Style: Lots.

Short Term Goals: Road races: I'll settle for a top 50% finish on at least one road race in 2002. Heck, it'll be a triumph if I don't get dropped on the first hill. Crits: at least 1 top 10 finish this year. I didn't get one at all last year. Bummer.

Long Term Goals: Top 10 finish Masters Cat 4 Criterium Championship.
