What Jeff saw:

Category: 5
Result: Crash - fractured wrist

Summary: Crashed due to pedal clipping and tire blowout. Fractured wrist. Expect me back on the scene in July. This sucks unbelievably.

Full Report:

I felt really good today, which is why I took the corners as aggressively as I did. I think I just forgot to stop pedaling in the corners and I clipped as soon as we started speeding up. I popped up for bit, came down and had my tires slip off the rim and the tube blow out. I'm pretty sure that the seating of the bead was pretty good.

I landed on my left side with my left hand jammed downwards. I'll show you all tomorrow. There is quite a bit of road rash all over.

As far as my bike, the frame is OK, the wheels are messed up, the derailleur hanger is bent, and the rear derailleur has somehow jammed the chain. That or the freewheel is actually broken. I haven't checked.

Thanks very much to Brian and Ziggy who took care of me afterwards. After I got the cast at the hospital, I was able to drive back to Berkeley, and parallel park on a 15% hill. Then I locked my keys in the car. Woo.

What Santiago saw:

Category: Cat. 4 and Masters 30+ 3/4/5
Result: 8th and mid-pack.

Did the senior 4 and Masters 30+ 3/4/5. Both races were great, good speed (Sr 4 avg of 25 and Masters of 25.6), pretty safe races both of them, nice course, easy corners, .... anyway I had lots of fun.

On the Sr 4 I got 8th and on the Masters, I don't know, but it wasn't any where near the front. On this second race I got boxed big time against the sidewalk, no where to go. In any case I did go for a prim and got 2nd, almost there.

The sprint for in the Sr 4 race was pretty crowded, I got 8th and was on the wheel of the guy that got 2nd, and missed the 4th place by a tire, let go too early and 3 other guys just squeezed their "tires" just ahead of me. Anyway, it counts for the upgrade, missed the prices do :-))

Brian, thanks for your support on the second race and helping Patricia on protesting my placing on the first race. I'll explain tonight.

BTW, it was incredible to see the three Postal guys, including Larry Nolan, working together and almost lapping the field on the 40+ race.

What Ziggy saw:

Category: 5
Result: 3rd

Got off to a late start, missed Brian J. and had to drive much faster than I probably should have to get to Santa Rosa on time. I managed to get in a short warm-up before the race. Once the race got under way, I realized I could have just skipped warm-up because it was pretty slow. I moved around the front half of the group for about the first half, then tried my best to stay within the first five or so riders.

Brian J. was a little anxious that day so he decided to play tugboat and tow the race around for about the last half of it. I did take a couple of turns up front but Brian and another guy seemed to like it so much, I just sat back and enjoyed the draft. The last few laps of the race, some of the SGW guys were riding pretty aggresively at the front so I thought it best to stick with them if perhaps they were gonna lead out one of their riders.

Last lap around, still on the wheels of the SGW guys and a rider jumps hard from mid-pack. I hesitated for approximately 2 seconds then started chasing his wheel. Another rider from the very front of the pack jumped too and got a bit in front of me and we rode in this formation all the way to the finish. I was pretty surprised to see the gap we had created from the pack as I was sure someone was going to outshoot me for third place. But thankfully, it didn't happen and I got my first podium placing. The folks that put on the race didn't have the medals for cat 5's so I got a check (bummer!).
