Monterey Circuit Race
Saturday 9th March, 2002

What Brian J. saw:

Category: 4/5

Well how did Saturday go for everyone?

Kent and I did the Monterey Circuit road race, Senior 4/5. Things didn't go as planned. When I got there, I heard there was a bad crash in the Masters 35+ 4/5 race. I hope it wasn't one of our people! The rumors I was hearing was a racer broke his collar bone in the final sprint of the race. It was a pile up from what I heard.

Schedule for races was off by an hour. We didn't start racing until 1:00pm, by that time cloud cover was coming in and so was the wind. The course was an interesting one with twist and turns, short climbs, even a short steep one. I saw several racers lose there chain. Crazy!! Poor Kent, he was doing a heck off a job out there, but the flat tire monster got him. Myself I came down with a migraine headache about 30minutes into the race. It was a very long drive home. O-well!! There's always next weekend. f.y.i., Kent I had an average speed of 22mph. and a max of 44mph. after I left the course. What was your numbers? Pretty fast for a windy, bumpy, twisty ride "A"?

Result: Back of pack

In response to Brian's question, the crash did not involve either Alan or myself.

As for my report on out race: Alan and myself met at 5:30 am to begin our journey to the race (Santiago was not able to go) and arrived at the site and were met with a temp of about 49 F but with little wind on the course. The race began with an easy pace, I think everyone used the first lap to warm-up some more, then the racing began I believe that there was a 2 man break with a Alto Velo rider and then the rest of their team took control of the front of the field to let them get away.

The rest of the race was determined at the short wall section that led into a tight right hand corner which spread out the field on the down hill into the start/finish. I stayed with the field through out the race until the last lap and was towards the back and lost the group on the wall/tight turn section and finished about 100 yards behind the field/crash. Alan rode strong during a good portion of the race and lost contact at the wall/tight turn section with about 4 to go. Overall it was a good tough race and added to the continuing education of a couple of first year racers.

Result: Off the back

Carl and I rode in the Masters 4/5 at 8 am. The wind was blowing but not enough to affect us on the course that much. The temperature at the start was around 40 degrees F.

Neither of us was involved in the pile-up. Carl wasn't to far off the front, but I was well back after getting dropped on the short steep hill with 4 laps to go. The course was definitely fun to ride, I just need better short burst power to hang on. Overall the race for me was an improvement over Snelling. We had the same average speed of 22 mph, but I didn't check what my maximum was.
