What Tim saw:
Category: M45+
Result: Mid-pack
It must be Monday, I accidentally sent this out to Garry instead of the
whole distribution, then I wondered why I didn't get a copy. Duhhh!
Anyway, here it is again, sorry Garry!
Result: Just like Burlingame and Davis, Larry and Peter broke away this time
with others, I got like 7th in the field sprint. I got like 12th??
I saw Bob and Robin saw Ziggy there. They must've had fun with a bigger
field and faster guys on the narrow course!
Details: Course was fairly narrow .6 mile supposedly flat, four corner
course with some amusing manhole covers and bumps. Finishing straight,
slightly down hill. Next straight flat. Next straight, decidedly uphill.
Next straight downhill. The slopes give it charter so why lie and say it's
flat?
I pulled up to the line after a couple of warm up laps to find myself at the
back of the pack. Race started and stayed at a pretty good pace, but it was
fairly tough due to the slinky affect. At about half way through the race I
really started feeling it, so I moved up a bit where it was a little bit
smoother. Fairly early on, four guys went off led by Larry's teammate
Peter. Larry later broke away in hot pursuit with Caldwell on his wheel.
Caldwell couldn't hang on, and of course Larry made the bridge, and Larry
appeared to give the win to Peter.
In the meantime I was steadily working
my way up through the field, as more and more people got tired. I was using
momentum to pass people up the hill. I charged through turn 2 at the base
of the slight grade pedaling hard, while most people coasted thinking about
ground clearance. Not an issue with my Speedplays! Unfortunately I
chickened out in turn 1 on the last lap, as two groups were aiming at turn
1, one outside and one inside with me in the middle. What I lost in ground
there I made up on the uphill straight, but I should've made up more. OH
well...
It was fun and I feel like the last few weeks in the parking lot have helped
my overall conditioning, especially last week when I got 2nd.
