Sunday was a long, hot day at the track. The individual timed events
were held in the morning and early afternoon with the team events
rounding off the racing and a BBQ rounding off the day. Pritpal and I
were there all day and were joined by Garry, Scott and Ziggy for the
team events.
Pritpal and I had differing fortunes in the individual events. I had a
bad morning. My kilo was poor and my 4k pursuit nothing to write home
about. I decided to sit out of the masters 3k pursuit to save myself for
the team events later in the day. Pritpal on the other hand rode well,
getting a time 2 seconds quicker than mine, good enough for 2nd in the
masters kilo. Pritpal also rode a good 3k TT to get second in that also.
Come the afternoon, and we have a pretty good warmup prior to the team
sprints. I felt better after getting some more distance and jumps into
the legs. Ziggy, Scott and I rode the senior team sprint and put in a
good ride, 2.5 seconds quicker than our ride last week at 1:13.84. We
were rather pleased with the time and it was good enough for 3rd.
Pritpal, Garry and I also rode the masters team sprint, though Garry had
problems with his chain. It came off in turn 3 on his lead lap and as I
was quite close, Pritpal and I were taken up the track until it was
clear what was going on. We continued our ride and asked the officials
if we were allowed a re-start due to the mishap. We were, so we tried
again, only for Garry's chain to come off on the back straight this
time! Aaargh. I had to do 1.5 laps on the front before Pritpal took
over. Our time was given as 1:17.28 which gave us 3rd by 2 seconds (out
of 3 teams though!). Scott also a masters sprint with a make-up team.
The final event for us was the TTT ridden by Me, Garry, Pritpal and
Ziggy, which went reasonably well. There were a couple of problems but
we communicated reasonably well and finished with all 4 of us in 5:17.
It was a long, but fun day. I need to work on how to prepare better for
short sharp efforts interspersed through a day as these are not
something I generally do. I was pleased with our team sprint effort, as
had we ridden like last week, we would have been 4th. Our practise did
make the difference. Over the course of the day, I think I drank 6 large
water bottles, not to mention a lot more in the evening - it was hot!
The beer was nice at the BBQ.
