What Eugene saw:
Category: Masters A
Result: Back of pack
Andy and I drove down to Fort Ord for the first CCCX cross race. Got there about an hour before Andy’s race, 35+Bs, registered and got ready to see the course. Fun, a few road sections with lots of sand sections and three sets of barriers mixed in the ~8 minute long lap.
I got to watch as Andy hammered along in his 30 min race, good spectating from the start finish with a good view of three chunks of the course. Andy hanged tough and I think finished 17th.
Master As went off at 11 with about 50 in the 35+ and another 20 in the 45 plus, this was bigger than many of the crits I rode this year. Things haven’t changed, the gun went off and it was a hammering we go, I thought I’d take it a little easy and get a rhythm going, but all I went was slow. A bad thing as the start sets up race position and like running there’s almost no making up a slow start.
I went well on the less sandy parts but gave up quite a bit through the several downhill sand fests. Some of the course was actually quite fun with a couple dropoffs and some single track. Got caught by the leader on the last lap but no one else got me before the end I think. Just saw the results, 41st of 45 finishers. No where to go but up. Next week Vacaville.
