What Richard saw:
Category: 4
Result: Top ten
My run of consecutive top 10's continued at Davis. This time I was
8th, which am am happy with after how I was feeling mid race.
This was a pretty full field. I got a good spot to start on the front
row and went round the first corner in about 10th place. I spent most
of the race trying and failing to maintain position on the inside of
the circuit. It took a while, but I discovered that the outside
seemed to be easier.
I must have slipped as far back as mid pack as at one stage there was
an awful lot of riders in front of me. With about 9 laps to go there
was a large pile-up on the home straight which slowed me, but I was
able to get round it ok. This strung the bunch out and from then on
it was easier to move up.
With 3 laps to go, I dug deep and moved up the inside through the
finish to get myself into the top 15 and stayed there til the end,
slipping wheels as required when riders moved up on the outside. I
knew I wasn't close enough to the front on the last lap to challenge
for the win, but I wasn't able to do much about it given the twisty
course.
Turning in to the last corner, I had Bob speaking into my ear telling
me to sprint out of the saddle, so as we went round it, I changed up
a couple of gears, sprinted out of the corner and made up two places
by the finish to get 8th.

What Tim saw:
Category: M45+
Result: Mid-pack
I saw Richard's race, he looked good out there. As for me, I rested up on Sat so I wouldn't be tired like at Burlingame, and I did worse! I rode fairly aggressively trying to stay in the top ten. With two laps to go, I was trying to keep my outside lane open, but then it slowed and I got boxed in. I never did get unboxed, then I finished with a pathetic sprint for 14th. I could've gotten 12th, but I just gave up. I still had fun though. Once it gets to single file that course is really cool.
