EB’s version:
It dawned cold and rainy Saturday morning, perfect cross weather! It actually got better as it cleared but the ground was soaked. We got there is plenty of time to pre-ride the course a bit before the C/M35B race. Not quite the big turnouts of Pilarcitos or CCCX, but a good bunch anyway. Andy choose the fs-mtb bike for the day and it was a good choice for the fast downhill and the twisty bit and the big tires floated well in the slop, he paid for the weight on the hurdles and stairs though.
As the course deteriorated more running was required. My field had maybe 20-25 guys and it looked like I was going to have a group to ride with. I did for a couple laps but the stomach flu of the week before left me drained and I had to struggle through the race. I had good speed up the hill and on the long gravel sections, downhill technical bit was a learning experience I was trying to push.
Got lapped by James Cotes on the last lap, the second place guy caught me in the second hurdle and I caught back on and paced him to the finish. At least I lapped the big Sycip guy. I did talk to the old guy who rides for Jeager Wheelmen and it is the club from jersey I used to race against as a kid, but he’s only ridden for them out here. A tough race for me after the fun of Golden Gate, but good prep for next week’s Pilarcitos race at Coyote Point.

Fun course, mud was thick. Total start line size of about 30 guys or some. I actually raced with Andy. I pretty much lost it on the first uphill, wrong gearing and everybody shot by. But I hung in tough, kept a solid pace.
My back didn't really bother me until the end so that was a nice sign. Didn't get lapped either. I made up some ground, had fun at the bottom part of the decent. Like Eugene said, some running sections that were fun. Andy did have the right bike for the day.
The national Masters 45 champ was there. All I have to say is wow and the power of smooth transition mixed with bunny hoping.
Next week, racing both days!
