Tour of Nevada City
Sunday 20th June, 2004
What Ziggy saw:

Category: 3
Result: Did not finish

They should call this the "Tour at the End of The World" because you have to drive about that far just to get there. I didn't account for traffic in my travel time and got to the race site just in time to miss registration. Not to be left out of the race, I pleaded my case with the chief ref ( whom I had to chase round the course for 15 minutes), and was allowed to race.

Because of the traffic and the registration fiasco, I had just enough time to get to the car, pin the number on and go. I did manage to spin the legs out for two minutes on a freeway on-ramp that was closed off right near the course. The race was started with a rolling start which meant that I had to fight to keep my front spot. Well, I lost that fight and started the race at the rear of the pack.

I'm not sure that really mattered much because my legs basically filled with crap and started to eat themselves alive after only one lap. The race quickly became a dramatic lesson/example of why we warm up before crits. I was blown completely out the back after about four laps and pulled out maybe another four after that ( I was lapped and about to get another look at the front of the race).

Had I any idea that today was going to turn out as it did, I would rather have stayed home and gone to the track.

Mike Z: Justin England broke off the front of the P/1/2 race and rode solo for over an hour to the victory. He was being chased by Damon Kluck, Ben J-M, Antonio Cruz, and a bunch of other fast pros. Impressive ride. Perhaps even more impressive was the ride by Eric Riggs, (17 y/o teammate of Adam Switters and Danny Holloway), who kept pace with the chase group for all but the last three laps of the P/1/2 race.

Bob didn't have a good day either. His legs weren't as bad as mine, but he did have a 4th to defend. Bummer.
