What Jason saw:
Category: B
Result: Mid-pack
East side garrison fort ord. This was an awesome Mnt biking course....
A lot of sand and single track. 4 barriers, 3 man, 1 big ass branch. I
will have to say though there was one fun single track section. Was like
riding a roller coaster. Never had to pedal and was blitz through tress
going up down, left, right..it was sweet. There was one advantage I did
have, which were the 4 uphill sprint uphill sections....Super long laps.
I think we only did 4 or 5 ish.
This race was the bad one. My only goal was to be smooth in my
transitions....read below why that was hindered.
I show up register, got a magic marker number because I threw my old one
out, and was told LEFT side by the guy running the booth. I will admit I
was about 15 mins behind schedule, so only two laps around and brief
trainer warm up and I'm off to the start line with 24 other dudes. Get
there and notice every one has their number of the RIGHT side. So "shit"
I start to switch my number to the correct side. My gloves are stashed
in my shorts.... I get the official to wait up. A guy next to me offers
to help. I'm looking like the idiot....just before we finish (two pins
left) the official goes, okay go!
WTF! So the guy and I bolt. He moves
up I'm still clipping in. I hit the gas. I catch up to the back. Over
the first barrier. I'm pretty sure I'm out of the top 10 for the day. So
I'm pissed. Over the barrier, remount, put my gloves on, while passing
guys, say "f**k it! I'm going to hunt down any weak ass bitches and ride
until I see spots!" (sorry but I was frustrated and angry at the
situation, felt a bit robbed) I go barreling into barriers, just going
hard and fast and not giving a rats ass to being smooth and efficient.
Every lap I pass somebody. Most people were caught or passed on an
uphill section. Lap three I got pretty close to loosing my cookies a few
times. It was without a doubt the ugliest ride I've ever done. The worse
part was that I could have made up more time if I was smooth....ugh.....
I guess my consolation was that the promoter was pretty impressed with
the way I chased down as many people as I did, with my god awful
start... he ended up giving me a high five as I crossed the line. Max
184, Avg 177. I finished 15th and if one more lap would have moved up
another 3 spots.
