Sacramento Cyclocross - Vacaville
Saturday 22nd October, 2005
What Jason saw:

Category: B
Result: Mid-pack

Two days at max LT

Another fine weekend for racing in NorCal. This week's races were Vacaville and Bay Area Super Prestige #2 CandleStick.

First a big thank you goes to my wife. On sat at Vacaville, I wasn't feeling the nerve to race and she talked me into racing. It ended up being a fun, but super hard day. Thanks wife. :-)

So Vacaville, 8 out of 19 half a lap back of the winners. My anniversary cross race. First cross race ever was this one. Since it was 75 in Vacaville it pretty much was a dust bowl. But a lot of fun. This year they ran it counter clockwise. It had a sweet ravine that was a blast to go down and get shot out of. It was like being a kid all over again. Then some uphill. Back down to another huge uphill, with a fast descent then a nice long straight away.

Simply that hardest race I've ever done. Harder than Leesville road race. I came close to loosing my lunch four times....no support crew for water so the last two laps were pure threshold pain that took me to my wits end. I think I was cross eyed when it was done.

What made it hard were the two uphills back to back. The second, uphill was long, in the sun, and slippery. To make it fun they put a barrier at the top...(Super Cross Pro Stud Andy Jacques-Maynes, rode the whole hill and bunny hopped the barrier every lap....freak) followed by a quick, short, steep up hill. Most guys went up the full way once or twice, but by the end they were running the whole thing. I opted to run it every lap, with baby steps, favored rhythm over wasted energy in attempting to ride it. My tactic paid off as I was able to move up the field from dead last to 8th. After the hill section I was able to catch a few guys. Nothing like passing two guys and they can't hold your wheel....
