East Bay CX - Camp Parks
Saturday 25th November, 2006
What Jason saw:

Category: B
Result: Mid-pack

So the J Sven Van der Sage made a brief appearance this weekend. Stars aligned, the 3 criteria for racing were met. 1. Work..eased off just a tad for now...2. Homework for school caught up and slightly ahead...3. Race location near by, 10 mins from my house to Camp Parks Army base in D town (Garry's home village).

This CX race is total Velo Promo (VP). Odd location, little or no prize list (no prize list), cheap entry fee, and a smacked together course that is f%$%king hard! Now this course is not hard as in difficult - technical or super fast, this course literally kicks your ass. 3 cement run ups, two super bumpy sections only to have been rivaled by BASP#1 at Hellyer, 2 barriers and one nice flat section on the road. It _/*IS */_the toughest CX course in the area. It just eats at you as the laps go by. With grantee, racers drop out due to the nature of this course. The years have seen the carnage this course brings.

This was my 3rd time racing this course. 1st I had to drop out due to the pain in my back, 2nd I have no idea how I survived but I was in a tonne (for the those from the isles) of pain. So this year I wised up slightly ( a normal person would not be back for this type of punishment a 3rd time, but I got to get my racing in where and when I can this season, and I think we can all agree I am no where near normal) I pumped my clinchers up to 60 psi. ( I usually run 36-44ish for traction purposes). Hoping to add some cushin for me body. Also I'd be super anal about spinning the flat section. Normally I get carried away and haul ass in a big gear, but this course...it's better to spin and save the body some.

The field was 13-15 B's and 5 A's going off together at the same time. At the gun, I was not aggressive mainly because I knew this course would wear on a lot of the field and quick. ( I think only 4-5 others have raced this course prior that where even there). Off we go...oh man I wanted to be at the back but not behind the guy that should be in the C's....damn it. Field gets movin and fat boy won't let me pass. Ah here we go..bumpy barrier section, okay finally got rid of him flat section I spin my legs like crazy...take 3 guys with me (yes I got stuck pulling guys again). Over the 3 sets of stairs and we are together...I take a moment to pass and drop them. 3-4 laps (not even half way) later I catch a group of two...they are fading... I hold true to my game plan and pass about 2 others. I think I'm in 7th. As I take in laps under my belt I notice a few more guys dropping out... 2nd to last lap I get caught by the lead, a B rider and an A rider. I manage to stay with them until the end.

I don't really care where I placed I'm just super happy my back didn't kill me by the end of this thing and for once this course didn't beat the sh*t out of me.
